Understanding Blueprints
By Matthew McKernan - Ezinearticles
If you are remodeling or building your new home when a builder hands you the blue prints it may be difficult to understand. A good way to think of the blue prints is to think of them as a map. Basically that is what they are. The blue prints will have symbols and drawings just like a map would. Once you are able to understand what all these pages mean then it will be easy for you to understand how everything will come together.
In this article we are going to discuss how the blueprints are usually drawn. Also how explain what the elevations mean and why they draw it that way. It is helpful to you to understand what will be going on and how they plan on doing it.
On the blue prints it will explain a lot. It will explain the dimensions, the materials that they will use, locations and the construction, finishes and more. All these things are what will be done and used during the construction of your home. It is a map for the builder. Most of the information that is on the blue prints is probably the contract that you have with the builder.
They are more detailed than the floor plans. It is helpful because it will give you a precise estimate of what it will cost you to build or remodel your home. Blueprint floor plans are usually drawn in a ¼" scale of what the actual size is. This is done for the builders benefit. It is so the builder will be able to scale the drawing and figure out the right measurements. One of the basic rules is that for every ¼" scale means that for every ¼" on the plan will stand for 1' of actual length. With some details may be drawn at a scale of 1/8" or even at ¾". For example they will do this with the framing layouts or the built-in details. The right builder will be able to look at the key on the plans and be able to determine the scale of the home.
They are usually broke down into four elevations. The elevations that are drawn are the front, the rear and each side. The reason for this is so that the measurements are able to be taken for the necessary aspect. They are also drawn to scale and they also show what the home will look when it is finished.
